Think of the internet as a public place: when you speak loudly with a friend beside you then all other people between you and your friend will hear what you are saying. It works the same on the internet: when you connect to a web site then all the hosts in between could sniff your traffic, and this is not what you would expect if you need to enter any sensible data such as username and password (think of e-commerce, internet banking, webmail). |

In some situations you need to share a password, for example the one of your encrypted office documents, with other people, for example your boss or your secretary giving them the possibility to access your documents even if you loose that password. But I think you now that your password is a secret and no one can see it, other wise it would not be called a secret! So I will discuss some techniques to achieve the goal of split your password and give pieces of it to the people who need to restore it in case you loose it. But remember that you want confidentiality: a person alone with a piece of your secret could not be able to restore your password. |
