IPsec is designed to build a virtual private secure network using the existing internet infrastructure. It is a collection of protocols that give you both host based authentication and confidentiality. IPsec is implemented at network layer so it is transparent to your existing network applications.
IPsec has got two working modes: transport mode and tunnel mode. You can choose transport mode if both endpoints support IPsec at operating system level and you are about to establish an end to end connection. In this scenario each packet’s body will be encrypted, but the packet’s IP header will be left in clear.
Otherwise, if one or both the endpoints don’t support IPsec but two intermediate hosts (security gateways) do, then you can choose the tunnel mode. In this case both the payload and the header of each packet sent between the security gateways will be encrypted. Every packets has also a new IP header which contains the IP of the security gateway it passes through. |
